The operation of the Tramway Baixada Santista started in April 2015. Currently, between Barreiros, in São Vicente, and Porto de Santos, in Santos, the system has 9 of the 15 stations planned, in 6.5 km of extension. A modern operational control centre was delivered in June 2016.
The population of the nine municipalities of Baixada Santista will take advantage from the benefits of the system, since there will be fewer buses in circulation, less noise pollution, in addition to reducing the travel time between those cities. The two tramway stretches from Santos will meet about 70 thousand passengers transported daily by 22 cars, 15 of them already delivered by the manufacturer. The remaining vehicles will arrive in Santos until 2017.
The passenger of Baixada Santista since 6 of June also has the benefit of metropolitan integration between tramway and 37 intercity bus lines.
Commercial operation began on 31 January 2016 and has transported more than 200,000 passengers, from 7am to 7pm. (Translation of UITP)
This new modal has been built by Empresa Metropolitna de Transportes Urbanos (EMTU/SP), a company belonging to the State of São Paulo Government.
